Here's everything you need to know about taking the ferry
A day trip to Cozumel - East of Playa del Carmen
It's important to plan your trip to Cozumel to maximize your experience.
Getting there
The best way to Cozumel is via the Ferry(s). The departure pier is just a short distance from the condo. You can see in the photo below just how close it is. There is no need to purchase tickets in advance, you may buy them whenever you're ready to go.
Before you head over to Cozumel, you should think about how you want to experience it. Here are 3 options.
- You want to explore the island on your own
- You want to go snorkeling
- You want to look around the town, do some shopping, grab lunch or dinner and drinks
I don't recommend the 3rd option. The town looks the same as Playa del Carmen, same merchandise, and same food. No reason to go unless you want the experience of the ferry and the view.
If you want to snorkel, I suggest you work with one of the many snorkel companies. They will arrange to pick you up at the ferry dock on Cozumel. Here's one example, I've never used them, but I've heard good things. You should also check with our concierge desk at the condo complex. It's in the office space across the garden from our condo.
One of the benefits of taking the snorkeling tour is spotting dolphins! It never gets old.
Experience the island on your own
I recommend this option. Make arrangements to rent a jeep in advance. Our concierge office at the condo complex can help with this. But, here's an example of the vehicles available.
Now that you have your vehicle, your snorkel gear, and your sunscreen, your heading off. Don't worry, you can't get lost. There's one main road that goes around the island. Here are some things you may want to see:
The Cozumel Pearl Farm
You MUST drive along the east coast of Cozumel. There are just a few bars and maybe one or two houses. But the surf and beaches along there are beautiful. Don't swim unless there are signs saying it's safe...it's very rough.
Don't miss the lighthouse on the southeast coast
If you're really crazy about ruins, then stop at San Gervasio. Otherwise skip it. Honestly, they aren't very impressive. Certainly, not as impressive as the Playacar ruins directly across from our condo
Make sure you get back to the ferry before the last one departs or you'll be spending the night in San Miguel, Cozumel. Or, maybe you want to spend a few days.
And then back to home, sweet, home in Playa del Carmen.
