Vacation Cocktail of the week - Blueberry and Lemonade MargaritaFor the Blueberry Puree2 cups fresh blueberries1 to 2 tablespoons sugarFor the Margarita1/4 cup sugar2 lemons4 teaspoons blueberry puree1/2 cup lemonade1/2 cup good quality silver tequilaDirectionsProcess blueberries in a blender until smooth. Place a wire mesh colander over a small bowl and pour the puree into the colander, pushing it through the wire mesh and into the bowl with the back of a spoon. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons sugar to the puree and stir to combine. Taste and add additional sugar if desired. Cover bowl and refrigerate puree until ready to make cocktails. Can be made several days in advance.Place 1/4 cup sugar on a small plate. Add the zest of one lemon and mix to combine. Run the cut side of a lemon lightly around the rim of your margarita glasses and then dip the moistened rim into the sugar/zest mixture to coat the rim. Fill each glass about half-way with ice.Fill a cocktail shaker about 3/4 full with ice. Add 2 teaspoons of the blueberry puree, 1/4 cup lemonade, and 1/4 cup tequila. Reversing Falls, Pembroke, MaineThe oh-so-interesting phenomenon of reversing falls can be seen in the narrows between Dennys Bay and Cobscook Bay in Pembroke, Maine.Because the tides in the area are among the worlds highest tides, that, combined with the large rock ledge, makes the falls appear to reverse several times per day.Fun Falls Facts:*Reversing Falls is a town park.*Historically it was a farmstead.*The cemetery remains (on the right side).*Opposing currents create reverse waterfall at low tide.*There are strong currents at all sides.*There is an old shipwreck on the left hand shore.*Check the tide table to be there at low tide.From Machias, it is about a 45 minute drive north on Route 1 to Pembroke.It is a right hand turn off of the highway just before the post office (if you pass it, turn around at the gas station).After turning right off route 1 north, go to the end of the road, turn right then a quick left onto Leighton Point Road where there is a sign (well, sometimes not) that says &quot;Reversing Falls&quot;.Go 3 3/10 mile up that road and take the right onto Clarkside Road. After we purchased one of our vacation rental properties – Featherbed Island House – in Machiasport, we discovered that it has a connection to the notorious pirate, Cap’t Black Sam Bellamy.Although Cap’t Black Sam Bellamy had a career as a pirate captain for under two years, he is known as the wealthiest pirate in recorded history, according to Forbes Magazine. His nickname was the “Prince of Pirates” and his crew was know as “Robin Hood’s Men”.A lot has been said recently about Cap’t Sam down on Cape Cod. You see, his pirate ship, the Whydah, sank off the coast of Wellfleet, MA, when the Captain was only 28. Rumor had it that he was going to make a stop on the Cape to visit his lover, Goody Hallett. Tragically, the boat sank in a dangerous nor’easter in 1717. The ship went down with 143 people on board. A hundred and three bodies washed up on shore, none of which was identified as the captain.Pirate Ship MaineAll was forgotten for quite some time until the wreckage of the Whydah was found off the coast of Cape Cod in 1982 and it contained considerable loot. At the time of its sinking, the Whydah was the largest pirate prize ever captured, and the treasure in its hold amassed roughly 4.5 to 5 tons, including huge quantities of indigo, ivory, gold, and 20,000 to 30,000 pounds sterling, divided into 180 sacks of 50-pound (23 kg) each according to an account on Real Pirates.There is currently a museum in Yarmouth, MA devoted to the pirate ship, The Whydah and her history. Currently, they are running DNA testing on some of the contents, hoping to prove once and for all if this wreckage was, indeed, the pirate ship of Cap’t Bellamy.But what happened to the rest of the loot that wasn’t in the ship? And what’s the connection with Machiasport, Maine?According to a Seattle Times article, Cap’t Bellamy had high hopes to establish a pirate utopia in the Machiasport area of Maine. The grassy stretch of riverbank between Renshaw Point and the Old Rim Bridge was the parcel of land where Cap’t Bellamy planned on building a “pirate retirement community”. (Our property, Featherbed Island House, abuts Renshaw Point).W.C. Jameson, in his book, Buried Treasures of New England: Legends of Hidden Riches, Forgotten War Loots and Lost Ship Treasures, writes about the Machiasport fort. According to the book, around 1716, Bellemy chose a region, easily defensible, where the entire bay could be observed from its vantage point. A fort was erected — the first part of the captain’s kingdom where he could command the entire east coast. An underground vault was dug and in it was placed considerable treasure — the location kept secret, because after it was constructed, Bellamy ordered the workers killed. The loot is estimated to be in the tens of millions of dollars. Within a few weeks of Bellamy’s death, the fort was abandoned, it’s walls decomposed and today there is no trace of a fort.So is the treasure still out there? I’ve spoken with several of my neighbors who all said they tried and tried to discover the buried treasure as children in the neighborhood. But no one has stumbled up on it yet. I wonder if it could still be there, just waiting to be found?

Liberty Hall, Machiasport, MaineThe tiny town of Machiasport is home to about 1000 residents. I don’t think there currently are any stores in the town – that’s how small it is. Machiasport is comprised by several villages including Starboard, Larrabee, Bucks Harbor and the actual village of Machiasport. As you travel down Route 92 through the pine trees, you will go around the bend where the road meets the ocean and there you are… in the village. Currently, the village is home to the Machiasport Historical Society and beautiful Liberty Hall which is being lovingly restored.According to Wikipedia:Liberty Hall is set on the west side of Port Road (Maine Route 92) in the dispersed village center of Machiasport. It stands on a rise, facing east toward the Machias River. It is a two-story wood frame structure, with a front-facing gable roof, clapboard siding, and a stone foundation. The roof is topped at the front by a small tower, which has an elaborately-decorated open belvidere (viewing platform) with round-arch openings and quoined corner supports, topped by a mansard roof and weathervane. The roof is a replica of the building’s original, which was at one time replaced by a shallow-pitch pyramidal roof. The main facade is symmetrical, with a center double-door entrance topped by a lintel with bracketed molding. Flanking the entrance are doubled sash windows, taller versions of which rise on the second floor. The central second floor windows have round-arch tops. Similar windows adorn the sides, all capped with stylistically similar lintels. The building corners are quoined at the first level, and pilastered at the second. The interior is arranged with a vestibule area in the front, a meeting space on the first floor, and a performance auditorium with stage on the second floor.Construction of the hall was authorized by the town meeting in 1873, and the building was completed the following year by Andrew Gilson, a Machias contractor and politician. SNOGA!If it has to do with snow and winter activities, you can bet that someone in Maine would have discovered it.  The newest craze is SNOGA -- yoga in that fluffy white stuff we call snow.I first heard of SNOGA through an article in the Bangor Daily News.  It was invented (I suppose) by Holly Twinning of Maine Yoga Adventures.  Yoga is done with some modifications -- no poses lying down, and sometimes the use of snowshoes to help with balance. There are so many wonderful little shops that have tasty goodies, it’s hard to pin down just one. Luckily, we don’t have to, do we? We can just narrow it down to area or town.So what is my favorite bakery in DownEast Maine? I would have to say Moose Island Bakery in Eastport. Located right on the main street – Water Street – you’ll see it in one of the historic old buildings. Walk in and you’ll think you died and went to sugar heaven — the windowed counter is fully of sweet confections . They have breads and cakes and cupcakes and scones. Settle in with the local newspaper or the free wifi, some coffee and enjoy a breakfast pastry or savory croissant. Indeed, even the dunes are formed of rocks. Although it’s not a beach to walk barefoot, if you ever get a chance, put on your walking shoes and walk this beach – you muscles will thank you for it. Every step slides you through a mountain of rocks. Trust me, you’ll feel it in all of your muscles tomorrow.Although very few of the rocks are actually Jasper rock, they are in all sizes, shapes and colors and textures — besides greys and browns, you can find gold and red and green. Many will be variegated with stripes of white cutting throughout. Or speckled. Although beautiful dry, their real beauty comes when they are wet from the ocean waves and shimmer and shine. Times a billion or more. Don’t forget that.One of the best features of the beach is the lack of people. Think summer and ocean beach and you might have images in your head of the Jersey Shore. Nope. Not here. A busy day here at this beach comprises of about a dozen people. Most days you can walk the mile long without running into another person. There aren’t many beaches in the United States that can boast that.Probably my favorite quality of the beach is the music the waves make as they rush onto the rocks. Hard to describe, but it’s very musical and rhythmic. Many days, the rushing of the tide is punctuated by the soothing lull of the distant foghorn.Jasper Beach has just a few parking spots (almost never filled to capacity) and no facilities. Please take out what you bring in. It is located about 10 miles from the town of Machias, down Route 92 as it winds its way through pine trees and the various villages of Machiasport. At low tide, do your own mud-dash and bring your picnic to the island. The views are amazing. Our neighbors told us that it was once a summer camp location for Native Americans back in the day.*******************************************************************THE PROPERTY is about 3 acres of salt waterfront, abutting several acres of town owned forest. The 200+ feet of shorefront is on the estuary where the river greets the ocean. Much of the yard is rolling lawn – the house is one of the rare homes that have unobstructed views of the water. The yard is filled with blueberry and raspberry bushes, apple trees (with several different varieties of apples).On the side of the house, is a tiny fresh-water pond which is a watering hole for all sorts of wildlife (keep your camera ready).********************************************************************Rumor has it that the pirate, Captain Black Sam Bellamy buried his treasure somewhere in proximity to this very property! (But please, no digging!).********************************************************************THE FARMHOUSE is very well designed to be both open, yet with plenty of private spaces – recently built, but using architectural salvage wherever possible from the cottage that once was on this very property .FIRST FLOOR— GREAT ROOM – The highlight of the great room is it’s two story wall of windows overlooking Machias Bay and Featherbed Island. Our newest fun addition is a vintage stereo and selection of records which, we’ve been told, have been the highlight of the space.—KITCHEN – the compact kitchen houses new Slate appliances (2017) – a fridge/freezer with ice maker, five-burner gas (propane) stove, dishwasher and over-the-range microwave. In early 2018, we will be adding new quartz countertops, as well as a custom made slate farmer’s sink. —PANTRY – Besides the kitchen, off of the back hallway is an antique ‘cigar-box’ pantry that holds almost every small appliance that you can think of. Our selection does change as appliances wear out, but just to give you an idea — currently we have a blender, Kitchen Aid stand mixer, Margaritaville margarita maker, electric kettle, ice cream maker, Belgian waffle maker, shave-ice maker, citrus juicer, molcajete, lobster pot (of course) with lobster bibs and crackers. We also have pie plates, rolling pins, baking dishes, aprons and cookbooks!—DINING ROOM – The dining area is another corner of the great room. There is a large farmhouse table that seats six comfortably under the soft glow of the antique chandelier. There are dishes and glassware for eight. Besides regular drinking glasses, we have an assortment of barware — martini, wine and margarita glasses.— THE MUSIC ROOM has french doors – left open to expand the living space of the great room, or closed for more separation. The music room holds a vintage wooden phonograph with a selection of 78 records (Dancing anyone? Waltz or perhaps a fox trot?). It also has several bookshelves with steamy (or not-so-steamy) novels, magazines and children’s books (and, of course several bird identification books) and a closet filled to the brim with board games and puzzles. There are several musical instruments if you have the talent (or even if you don’t). There is a loveseat that pulls out into a twin bed. There is also a radio/cd player and an assortment of cd’s.— COZY DEN in the back of the house has a flat screen television with a mid-level cable package and dvd player and library of about 100 DVD movies for kids and grownups.—FIRST FLOOR BATHROOM – The first floor bathroom has a stall shower with a Speakman Reaction shower head and unique river-rock sink. It also houses the washer and dryerSECOND FLOOR— MASTER BEDROOM – The master bedroom has a open window overlooking the great room to take advantage of the water views (there is black-out drapery for privacy). The bed is KING size and there are two closets, two small dressers and a comfy chair overlooking the pond. There is a SMART television (2018) . Note: this television does not currently get the full cable channel package.QUEEN BEDROOM – This bedroom is in the front of the house, with it’s queen bed tucked under the eves. There is just enough room for a dresser and closet, with a little writing nook overlooking the bay.TWIN BEDROOM – The final bedroom is also small – just enough room for a twin bed, dresser, chair and small closet.UPSTAIRS BATHROOM – This bathroom has a shower/tub combination and a travertine, trough sink. The shower has a Speakman hotel shower head.OTHER AMENITIES – wifi (as high-speed as we can possibly get in the area), hairdryer, iron and board, sewing kit, telescope, outdoor games – bocci, badminton, croquet, scavenger hunts, an art easel, quality sheets, fluffy duvets, boho quilts, pillow assortment, thirsty towels, soaps and shower amenities, eco-friendly laundry detergent (when available), rainy day activities for the itty-bitties – legos, indoor bowling, high-chair, charcoal ‘park-style’ outdoor grill, firepit and adirondack chairs, outdoor picnic table. ************************************************************************Our property is a CERTIFIED ENVIRONMENTAL LEADER IN HOSPITALITY; and also certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a BACKYARD WILDLIFE HABITAT – a perfect spot for birders and all nature lovers. Our newest fun addition is a vintage stereo and selection of records which, we’ve been told, have been the highlight of the space.—KITCHEN – the compact kitchen houses new Slate appliances (2017) – a fridge/freezer with ice maker, five-burner gas (propane) stove, dishwasher and over-the-range microwave. In early 2018, we will be adding new quartz countertops, as well as a custom made slate farmer’s sink. —PANTRY – Besides the kitchen, off of the back hallway is an antique ‘cigar-box’ pantry that holds almost every small appliance that you can think of. Our selection does change as appliances wear out, but just to give you an idea — currently we have a blender, Kitchen Aid stand mixer, Margaritaville margarita maker, electric kettle, ice cream maker, Belgian waffle maker, shave-ice maker, citrus juicer, molcajete, lobster pot (of course) with lobster bibs and crackers. We also have pie plates, rolling pins, baking dishes, aprons and cookbooks!—DINING ROOM – The dining area is another corner of the great room. There is a large farmhouse table that seats six comfortably under the soft glow of the antique chandelier. There are dishes and glassware for eight. Besides regular drinking glasses, we have an assortment of barware — martini, wine and margarita glasses.— THE MUSIC ROOM has french doors – left open to expand the living space of the great room, or closed for more separation. The music room holds a vintage wooden phonograph with a selection of 78 records (Dancing anyone? Waltz or perhaps a fox trot?). It also has several bookshelves with steamy (or not-so-steamy) novels, magazines and children’s books (and, of course several bird identification books) and a closet filled to the brim with board games and puzzles. There are several musical instruments if you have the talent (or even if you don’t). There is a loveseat that pulls out into a twin bed. There is also a radio/cd player and an assortment of cd’s.— COZY DEN in the back of the house has a flat screen television with a mid-level cable package and dvd player and library of about 100 DVD movies for kids and grownups.—FIRST FLOOR BATHROOM – The first floor bathroom has a stall shower with a Speakman Reaction shower head and unique river-rock sink. It also houses the washer and dryerSECOND FLOOR— MASTER BEDROOM – The master bedroom has a open window overlooking the great room to take advantage of the water views (there is black-out drapery for privacy). The bed is KING size and there are two closets, two small dressers and a comfy chair overlooking the pond. There is a SMART television (2018) . Note: this television does not currently get the full cable channel package.QUEEN BEDROOM – This bedroom is in the front of the house, with it’s queen bed tucked under the eves. There is just enough room for a dresser and closet, with a little writing nook overlooking the bay.TWIN BEDROOM – The final bedroom is also small – just enough room for a twin bed, dresser, chair and small closet.UPSTAIRS BATHROOM – This bathroom has a shower/tub combination and a travertine, trough sink.
